Projects - 2025

In January 2025, at our annual membership meeting, PMKCA's Board of Directors asked our members and friends to tell us what community issues were highest on their personal list of concerns.  Of the eleven issues listed in the survey, six emerged as most important to the most folks.  We took those six issues and created from them a plan for "Talk Story" events, in which we explored the issues in greater detail, involving experts and authorities, and lots of discussion among our members and residents on what we wanted to accomplish.

Three of those six Talk Story events, covering three critical issues, have now occurred,.  You will find details about each one under the headings below.  (The remaining three will be reviewed again in the fall.)  Each event has provided us with information, given us insights and action items, and each one has generated projects and teams to carry them forward.

We're taking a break now (in July and August) to catch our breaths and to give the teams a chance to find their feet and define their objectives.  Each team is addressing an important community need which will provide benefits to every resident of our community.  We hope that you will give the teams your blessing, and your support, if you are able.

Aging Well in our Community

Our community has a large population of kupuna, elders who would prefer to live here than anywhere else.  Our rural community is often neglected by organizations and agencies that would provide services for our kupuna.  Our Talk Story event shone a light on our particular needs, as well as what we love about living here.  Our new team will be looking into every option that will make it possible for our elders - and our FUTURE elders - to live a happy, healthy and meaningful life here in their own homes, among friends and in our beautiful 'aina.

Dangerous Dogs

Our rural community has experienced more than its share of dog attacks on people and animals.  Our Talk Story event on this subject helped us understand new laws and the roles played by agencies and kicked off new efforts in the community to address the problem.  This section introduces tools to use in reporting incidents, and provide quick access to phone numbers and information about the rights and obligations of residents when dogs have become a threat to families, their pets and livestock.

Wildfire Preparedness

Wildfire is a significant risk to our community, especially in drought years.  Our first Talk Story event introduced us to the ways our homes and landscape might be vulnerable to wildfire, and how we might make them more resistant to uncontrolled fire in our rural community.  Our CERT team and other members are working to help residents reduce wildfire risks around their homes and to be prepared if a wildfire emergency is declared.
